The main reason for the rebrand comes from the merger of two broadcasting giants, CBS and Viacom, in 2019. Paramount is just one of the many subsidiaries owned by this mega corporation, but the name was chosen because of its popular brand recognition. The merger means a greatly expanded content library when compared to the old CBS platform, and Paramount Plus has big plans to pour money into original content in the coming years. It hopes to complete with market leader Netflix, as well as steal some market share away from the recent Disney-Fox merger. Whether Paramount Plus can make a dent in Disneyâs 86 million subscribers or Netflixâs huge 200 million plus audience remains to be seen.

The CBS/Viacom merger means subscribers now have access to a huge library of streaming content and live TV channels. Alongside the full CBS catalog youâll find BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, the Smithsonian Channel. Estimates put the current library of movies at around 2,500 (Including every Paramount classic) and more than 30,000 individual episodes of popular TV shows. Whatâs more, youâll get access to a range of live sports, including a pretty respectable number of local options. The platform promises at least 1,000 live sporting events per year, covering NFL games, the PGA Tour and NCAA March Madness. Soccer fans are well looked after too, with the UEFA Champions league and a number of South American leagues included.
